Cantautore e (ottimo) chitarrista nato in Irlanda, è attivo per molti anni nella scena acustica londinese. Del '94 il suo primo e finora unico album, registrato con l'aiuto di produttori e musicisti del giro, come il compianto TOM GREENWOOD, l'Australiano STIX, JAMES DeHAAN e STANLEY ADLER. Il lavoro riecheggia a tratti NICK DRAKE o BRUCE COCKBURN, ma siamo comunque su livelli piu' che discreti. Il 24/2/98 suona dal vivo nel programma CMR di BOB PATERSON, eseguendo le finora inedite "Johnny Don't Go Out Tonight/I Guess There's Nothing More I Can Say/Cast Your Spell". Nello stesso anno partecipa anche a "Floating World" di MARTIN STEPHENSON. Nel Marzo 2000 partecipa al Playpen tour italiano, registrando anche varie sessions radiofoniche, in cui suona brani come la già citata "Cast Your Spell", "Memories" e "Blue Moon Of Love". Si è ora ristabilito in Irlanda (ma non va confuso col Byrne della Glass Onion Band!), dove sta continuando a incidere nuovo materiale, sia da solo sia con altri musicisti. Un nuovo album è infatti in preparazione e dovrebbe vedere (speriamo!) presto la luce.

Cantautrice di origini bretoni-gallesi, Katell si muove inizialmente nelle scene Gallesi, Irlandesi e Londinesi. Dopo un album inciso nell'85 con una band Gallese chiamata TAN TRO NESA, con JACQUY BOX (s), DELYTH WYN (k), GORDON JONES (d), JON TREGENNA (g) e PHYL HARRIES (b). In questo lavoro (prodotto da BRIAN BREEZE) Katell canta e co-firma anche 3 brani: "Un Ffordd", "Y Dyn Arall" e "Ystrad Nofa". Nell'estate dell'89 partecipa assieme a TO HELL WITH BURGUNDY, PAT ORCHARD, DINNER LADIES, ANDREW CUNNINGHAM, BARELY WORKS e altri all'incisione di "...if you just tuned in...", compilation registrata all'Acoustic Room del Mean Fiddler e proposta l'anno seguente su vinile e CD (v. VV.AA.). Passeranno diversi anni prima di poter riascoltare una nuova incisione di Katell, che nel frattempo passa la maggior parte del tempo negli States. Finalmente nel '93 arriva il contratto con una grossa multinazionale e il primo album. Il promo di "O Seasons..." (vedi foto) ha confezione completamente diversa. 3 anni dopo il secondo, altrettanto riuscito, lavoro. Purtroppo ha poi perso il contartto con la Elektra ma ha ora inciso un nuovo EP per una piccola label: "What’s The Only Thing Worse Than The End Of Time?", che contiene tra l'altro la sua interpretazione di "River Man" di NICK DRAKE, incisa durante il tributo tenutosi a New York nel '97. Katell aveva anche partecipato al tributo a Jeff Buckley, suo grande amico, tenutosi a New York il 17 Novembre '99.

Cantautrice che già da qualche anno frequenta i folk clubs Londinesi, in particolare il 12 Bar, CAROLINE KENDALL partecipa tra l'altro attivamente alle ormai tradizionali serate dedicate alla musica di NICK DRAKE. Il suo primo lavoro è stato registrato nella seconda metà del 1998, con l'aiuto di VINCE DeCICCO dei PRAYING FOR THE RAIN alla consolle. Nel CD troviamo solo la chitarra e la voce emotiva di Caroline, ed è raro ascoltare una cantautrice suonare così bene la chitarra. Lo stile compositivo, semplice ma efficace, ricorda un poco una brava e dimenticata cantautrice Scozzese, SHELAGH McDONALD, i cui due splendidi album sono comunque stati di recente ristampati. Tra le canzoni si fanno notare soprattutto "Question for a Thought", "Evelina", "Leaving", "Wired To The High", "Finest Secret" e la conclusiva title-track, in cui l'influenza di Nick Drake si fa sentire. Ma non ci sono cadute di tono in questo esordio eccellente che dovrebbe far drizzare le orecchie a chi ama la prima JONI MITCHELL e le bellissime malinconiche canzoni scritte da ANNE BRIGGS e LAL WATERSON. Le ultime notizie la vedono mamma di un simpaticissimo bebe' di nome Jessie ma anche per la prima volta in Italia, ha infatti partecipato con successo (assieme a MALCOLM DARWEN dei Praying F.T.R.) al primo Nick Drake tribute italiano, nel Dicembre 2001. Caroline ha finalmente registrato il suo secondo lavoro, da poco pubblicato, e ha anche inaugurato il suo sito internet. Una reincisione di "Leaving" è stata inserita nella doppia compilation "Women of Heart and Mind".

Band di Manchester fondata nell'Ottobre 1987 da JOANNE HENSMAN (v,pc) e KARL WALSH (v,g,tb), entrambi studenti d'arte drammatica, a cui presto si unisce KEVIN METCHEAR (v,g,b,vl,m). Il nome proviene da un verso della "Canzone dei Vagabondi", facente parte dell'operetta Il Re Dei Vagabondi del compositore cecoslovacco Rudolf Friml. L'esordio avviene nel Marzo 1988 con "Mother Of The Sea" un brano della Hensman incluso in un EP comprendente anche materiale di RED MOON JOE e PASSION PLAY (v. VV.AA.). Il che porta alla firma per la Factory, la casa discografica di Manchester famosa per aver ospitato tra l'altro JOY DIVISION e DURUTTI COLUMN. Il primo album viene prodotto da NICK GARSIDE e vede la partecipazione di JUSTINE KANTNER e MATTHEW HAIGH ai violini in 3 brani. Nell'Agosto 1990 supportano i Barclay James Harvest nel loro tour Europeo e in seguito i THWB hanno modo di aprire per Graham Parker And The Rumour, Clannad and Bob Geldof Passano quindi a una label ancora piu' indipendente e con la produzione di JOHN BRAND (ALL ABOUT EVE e POOKA) incidono il 12" "Go". Nel '92, ancora con Brand, registrano il secondo Lp, questa volta autoprodotto e successivamente suonano a lungo in patria, in Italia e Canada, fino alla pubblicazione del terzo lavoro, nel Luglio 1994. Da questo punto in poi le mosse dei THWB si diradano un po', sia in campo discografico sia on stage. L'Aprile '98 vede comunque l'arrivo di "Marvel Of The Age" e nel Marzo 2001 il trio torna ai concerto nell'occasione del tour inglese di due membri dei Barclay James Harvest.

FOLK ROOTS August 1989 - Factory CD single
The first CD singles to pass this way come courtesy of Manchester's Factory, normally associated with gret days, moody bands in black coats and unceasing rain. To Hell With Burgundy, the bastard folk club trio, whirr and twirl wit a pair of selections from their decidedly autumnal debut and the jaunty Money previously unreleased. The title appears to be eponymous, label and catalogue details are, Factory, FACD 218. Joanne Hensman's got easily the best vocal of them all and that could be the road that their acoustic minimalism's best headed down.

Cantantautrice anglo-tedesca (vero cognome ?), dopo aver vissuto da piccola in Nigeria, studia all'Università di Bristol, dove milita per un poco nei BLUE AEROPLANES. Tenta poi una carriera solista che sembra averle fruttato solo un promettente mini-album composto da 7 canzoni per lo piú dedicate a problematiche "amorose". Nel lavoro, prodotto da GRANT SHOWBIZ, è accompagnata dall'ex-Blue Aeroplanes NICK JACOBS (g) e dall'ex Oyster Band IAN KEAREY (g). Ancora piu' interessante il secondo lavoro (giunto dopo 10 anni!), in cui Caroline usa anche testi poetici da lei musicati.

GREAT NEWS: James Varda is back again!
JAMES VARDA (v,g,hc) nasce nel '62 a Twickenham. Album prodotto da JOHN LECKIE negli studi privati di ROY HARPER, il cui figlio NICK suona la chitarra in "Strange Weather", brano in cui è presente anche STEPHEN SMITH (d). Nel 33 giri suona anche JOHN SMITH (b). Suona spesso al Mean Fiddler e nella primavera '89 si esibisce all'Half Moon di Putney dove presenta anche le nuove "Into The Light" e "Weary". In Agosto è invece al 13° Kendal Folk Festival. Dopo aver supportato i tour di Haper e anche dello scomparso TOWNES VAN ZANDT, James non ha piu' suonato dal vivo pur continuando a scrivere e solo nel 2003 ha ricominciato a incidere. Finalmente, nel Gennaio 2004 arriva il secondo lavoro: "In The Valle"

FOLK ROOTS October 1988 - Hunger LP
Continuing the tale of a recent upsurge in the fortunes and numbers of singer/writers. Part 214: the story so far... young James Varda, a tousle- haired youth who has a voice resplendent with echoes of Bob Dylan, Roy Harper and (above all) Roger McGuinn has just issued his debut record on the brave, worthy Murmur label, who're out to bring to the attention of the public all manner of good music. Varda's writing is full of bleak references and he belongs to the angst school of troubadour, where the jolly singalong image of the acoustic guitar is banished in favour of streams of consciousness.
The cover of the disc is in keeping with James's independent spirit, sporting a back photo all misty and blurred. Meanwhile our hero gruffs through songs with titles like Black On Black, I Can't Stand It or Crawl In The Pen, given to circle thrashing his guitar; not, it has been noted, the stuff of light relief to play with morning coffee and toast.
James has his mind on more serious affairs and certain personages have predicted great things for Master Varda if he stays true to his low-key roots. Indeed, recognition has already come his way during a support slot on Roy Harper's summer end autumn tour, while Nick Harper strums strings on Strange Weather. The title's a strange one, but it doesn't hold James back as he ploughs his way through the murky waters, which fringe the roots pond. (Now read on).

Kathryn è nata e cresciuta a Liverpool dove il papà conduceva un folk club e cantava anche nel gruppo Abbey Folk. Fu così abbastanza naturale che fin da piccola incominciasse a studiare pianoforte e a scrivere canzoni.
Le prime esibizioni live furono con la sorella Emma, come Yak Attack, ma il suo primo concerto ufficiale si tenne al centro d'arte del college di Newcastle, dove aveva da poco terminato gli studi.
Decisa a intraprendere la dura carriera di singer/songwriter, aiutandosi con i mestieri piu' disparati, visto il disinteresse delle case discografiche alla fine si risolve a crearne una lei stessa.
Tra il '98 e il '99 incide così il suo primo album (pare sia costato in tutto circa 80 sterline!) che subito ottiene recensioni positive dalla stampa nazionale e straniera. Anche John Martyn si interessa a lei e la ospita in un suo lavoro. Segue un eccellente EP, le inedite "Kiss The Forehead" e "Cradle" sono due piccole gemme e vi compare anche la versione in studio di "Madmen And Maniacs", a cui per l'album era stata preferita chissà perché quella dal vivo. Un secondo lavoro viene pubblicato nel Giugno 2000, con ancora maggior successo, tanto da rischiare di vincere il Mercury Music Prize di quell'anno. L'album viene promosso con molti concerti, che toccano questa volta anche l'Italia e, forse sperando di seguire le orme di DAVID GRAY, viene preso in consegna dalla East West che lo ristampa e distribuisce piu' ampiamente dal Settembre 2001. Un paio di mesi dopo esce un nuovo singolo, contenente l'inedita "Foreign Skies".
